SOKOL POSTCARDS

USA

(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)

The first Sokol unit in the USA was formed in 1865, in St. Louis. Other units formed in other cities, including one in Chicago in 1866. In 1917 all the American units merged into the American Sokol Organization, which is still very active today. Postcards have been issued for some of the American competitions.

1933

The 1933 festival was held in Chicago, in conjunction with the Chicago Worlds Fair of that year, celebrating Chicago's centennial. Special cachets were created for the festival, and for Czechoslovak Day at the fair.

1937

As I mentioned in the Introduction to these pages, poster stamps were also created for many events, with designs matching the posters and post cards created to advertise and commemorate the festivals. Here is one for the 1937 Sokol festival in Chicago.

1947

Another poster stamp, for the 1947 festival.

1961

1965

In 1965, the US Post Office Department issued a stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Sokol movement in this country.
