TRAINS ON U. S. STAMPS and POSTAL STATIONERY

page of trains on U.S. Stamps

Trains on stamps are my favorite collecting area, so although these pages are not formally a part of my philatelic alphabet, I am including them so I can share some of my favorite stamps and covers.

Below are thumbnail images of all the U.S. postage stamps and postal stationery with a train or rail theme, as listed in Norm Wright, Sr.'s ATA Handbook 138, World Railways Philatelic (to which I am indebted for much of the technical data quoted here), plus a few others I felt belonged. The stamps are arranged by type (Locals and Expresses, US postage stamps, then Parcel Post, Revenues, and postal stationery).

11/16/2004 - A viewer pointed out that I was not showing here the stamps with streetcars or trolleys, and though I do not collect those, they are listed in the ATA Handbook, so I have added spaces for them in the table below, and will add images and text as I acquire them. I have also added other items I had simply put off including, such as postal cards. I am still NOT including here stamps such as Scott 628, the John Ericsson commemorative, whose rail connection is that its subject designed the steam locomotive "Novelty" in 1869.

You may explore the stamps below in three ways:

- Click on any thumbnail to bring up a high-res version of that image, OR

- Click on the legend below any image to go to a page that discusses the purpose and history of the stamp, and shows covers and other collateral material, OR

- Click on the little steam locomotives at the top of the page to move forward and backward through all twelve pages of text and images.
