SOKOL POSTER STAMPS
(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)
Poster stamps
are stamps bearing advertising, usually for an event or product,
and often reproducing an actual poster that was used at the same time.
They were used widely in Europe in the early 20th century, especially in Germany,
and in the US and other countries as well.
Below are images of all the Sokol poster stamps I own, plus some contributed by
Brian Day, credited as appropriate.
1901 1904 1907 1908 1911 1912 1913 1914 1919 1920 1921 Yugoslavia
1922 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928
This rare 50p charity label depicts a Sokol fighting the Austrian "Hydra" joined by a falcon.
1929 1930 1932 1934 1937
USA 1938
The image on the poster stamp above is a reproduction of Adolf Liebscher's painting of
the All-Sokol Slet of 1882.
The strip above shows the history of the All-Sokol Slets prior to 1938.
There should be ten stamps, the leftmost having the same design as the
green one above, showing the 1882 Slet.
