SOKOL POSTCARDS

1887

(Click on any image to view an enlarged version)

1887 was an important milestone for Sokol, the 25th anniversary of its founding. An all-Sokol Slet was planned for Prague, but was banned by the Hapsburg government. A smaller Slet was held in Český Brod

(No postcards available for that event.)

The card below was produced in Prague for the anniversary. The vignette is a photo of Dr. Tomas Cerny, then national leader of the movement. Posted locally in Prague, the card has a bilingual cancel dated 24.1.87. To comply with Austrian postal regulations, the German "Correspondenz-Karte" has been added with a handstamp. The printed message above the handwritten one translates "See you again in Slavonic Prague, Sokol rally 1887."

Thanks to Brian Day for the images of the card above, and the information about it.

Note that this early postcard has an "undivided back" bearing only the addressee information, with written message on the image side. This was the rule for postcards prior to the early 1900's, when the divided back was finally authorized in most countries.
